Twilio Integration — Link AI

Bring your own Twilio number — Link AI is your voice layer.

TL;DR

Link AI runs on top of your existing Twilio phone numbers so you keep ownership of the numbers, the carrier relationships, and the billing — and add an AI voice agent as the answering layer. The integration uses Twilio's Programmable Voice and SIP infrastructure with a webhook to Link AI for each inbound call. Outbound dialing is supported the same way. Built for teams who already have Twilio in production, want low latency (~200ms first response), and want full control of recording, routing, and compliance. Setup is a single webhook URL change in the Twilio console.

What this enables

  • Keep your existing Twilio numbers, geo coverage, and pricing.
  • Inbound and outbound voice AI on any Twilio number.
  • Sub-300ms first-word latency thanks to direct Twilio media streams.
  • Recording controls — turn on/off per number or per call.
  • Native handoff to a human agent or call queue when the AI signals escalation.

Why this integration matters

Twilio is the dominant programmable telephony provider — most teams that built any voice infrastructure in the last decade run on Twilio numbers. Replacing the underlying carrier just to add AI is the wrong trade-off. Link AI's Twilio integration lets you keep everything below the AI layer unchanged: same numbers, same SIP trunks, same compliance posture, same billing. What changes is the webhook URL on the inbound number — instead of pointing at your old IVR, it points at Link AI, which speaks to Twilio over Programmable Voice Media Streams for low latency. The architecture is documented in detail in the Link AI Voice repo and is the same path the founding team uses for their own production load.

Setup steps

  1. Step 1

Connect Twilio with an API key

From Link AI Settings → Integrations → Twilio, paste your Twilio Account SID and a scoped API key (with Voice permissions).

  2. Step 2

Point your number's webhook at Link AI

In the Twilio console, set the inbound voice webhook on the chosen number to the URL Link AI generates. HTTP POST.

  3. Step 3

    Test inbound

Call the number from your own phone. The AI should answer within a second; Link AI logs show the call session in real time.

  4. Step 4

    Configure recording and transfer rules

Decide whether calls are recorded (and stored where) and which intents trigger a transfer to a human queue.

  5. Step 5

    Wire outbound dialing (optional)

If you want the AI to make outbound calls (follow-ups, callbacks), grant Link AI outbound permission and pick the caller-ID number.

Sample use cases

Existing Twilio + new AI receptionist

A roofing contractor has been on Twilio for years. They flip the webhook on their main number to Link AI and the AI is answering inside ten minutes — no number migration.

Multi-region call routing

A logistics firm with Twilio numbers in five countries adds Link AI on all of them; the AI greets in the local language based on the number called.

Outbound follow-up calls

A B2B sales team uses Link AI to make Hebrew outbound follow-up calls through their existing Twilio number. The receiving caller-ID is the team's familiar Israeli number.

FAQ

Do I need to port my number?

No. The integration works on numbers already on Twilio — you only change a webhook, not the underlying number.

What is the typical latency?

Under 300ms first-word latency in benchmark testing on Tel Aviv-region Twilio numbers, which is at or below human conversational latency.

Are call recordings stored?

Optional per number. If enabled, recordings are stored encrypted in Link AI storage and a signed URL is attached to the CRM activity.

Can I run AI and human agents on the same number?

Yes. Set rules — for example, AI handles all calls but transfers to a human queue if the caller asks for one or if the intent is complex.

Does this affect my Twilio billing?

Twilio bills you as normal for the calls. Link AI adds a per-minute AI fee. There is no double-billing for the underlying telephony.
