ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)

Also known as: ideal customer profile, target customer profile

An ICP — Ideal Customer Profile — is a written description of the type of company and contact most likely to buy and stay with your product. A useful ICP includes industry, company size, growth stage, technology stack, the specific role of the buyer, and the trigger that makes them ready to buy. ICPs are used to filter outbound lists, prioritize accounts, and align sales and marketing.

The single most common ICP mistake is making it too broad. 'B2B SaaS companies in Israel' is not an ICP — it's a market. A useful ICP is closer to 'Heads of Engineering at Series-A B2B SaaS companies in Israel who are hiring two or more backend engineers right now.' The triggers are specific enough that outbound copy can hook on them.

Tight ICPs feel restrictive at first because they shrink the addressable target list — but they dramatically improve reply rates. Per Link AI's analysis of cold-email campaigns, moving from a loose ICP to a tight ICP typically takes reply rates from 1-2% to 7-12% without changing copy quality.
